About My D-SLR Photo Camera
Cristin is using a Nikon Digital SLR camera with a standard lens to take the photographs presentedin the gallery.
The camera I use to take the photographs on this site it's a Nikon D40 digital SLR.
On this page I will make a few short descriptions about the advantages of SLR cameras and
in particularly about my Nikon D40 which I use.
SLR Photo Cameras Introduction
![]() |
Single Lens Reflex camera (SLR) is a camera that uses a full manually or semi-automatic moving mirror mechanism which allow the photographer to view through the camera lens exactly what will be photographed on the film or on the digital sensor of the camera. |
One of the most big advantages of SLR cameras is the possibility to change the camera lens with
another types of lenses that will satisfy the photographer needs for various types of photography.
Most popular lens types are wide, standard and tele.
The majority of the SLR cameras have many useful manual functions that a photographer can use
in projecting his idea on an image. These manual functions include full control of the camera shutter
speed, aperture and ISO sensitivity, along with other useful functions like mirror lock-up, exposure
bracketing and many others.
Digital SLR Cameras Description
![]() |
The digital SLR cameras are based on the old SLR system but replacing the film medium storing with a digital sensor. These sensors may vary from camera to camera in terms of technology, performance and size, but at the majority of D-SLR cameras the digital sensors used are enough good to capture reasonable high quality digital images. |
Like the old SLR cameras, with the digital SLR cameras you have the ability to change the camera
lens with a more convenient one when in need. Also, the camera functions and controls are based
on the old SLR ones, thus keeping the vast camera control a photographer can apply when taking
photographs.
While sensors of digital SLR cameras may have various megapixel resolution, the most important
aspect of the image quality still remains the size of the digital imaging sensor fitted with the camera.
So, if two digital SLR cameras of various resolution (3 and 6) uses the same digital sensor (2/3), the
image quality will be very close to both, affecting very little any details of the same image captured.
The Nikon D40 Digital SLR Camera - The Camera I Use
![]() |
The Nikon D40 is a lowered version of the Nikon D50 camera but retaining the most important functions and features along with the high quality camera construction and digital imaging sensor. |
The camera body is more compact compared with the D50 and there are some new features like
boosting the ISO sensitivity from 1600 to 3200, unlimited 2,5 fps continuous shooting, a bigger LCD
display with more pixels, SDHC card ability, in camera retouching mode for editing your pictures
directly in the camera and of course the weight of the camera is smaller than the Nikon D50.
Some of the aspects I particularly like about this camera are:
Very small and light weighted making the camera easy and comfortable to carry and use.
Intuitive and easy to use for a first time D-SLR user, even if the menu is very complex
The Nikon D40 pictures are of high quality and more professional look compared with P&S compacts.
Good and very efficient autofocus system.
Unlimited continuous shooting (2,5 fps) for sport or action scenes.
Bright viewfinder and good and large LCD monitor.
The kit lens render surprisingly good quality images without optical aberrations.
The battery last for at least 600 pictures with intensive LCD and auto-focus use.
Good build quality.
