The History Of Photography - Evolution

The word photography derives from two Greek words: "fotos" - which means light, and "graphy" -
which means draw, or write. Therefore, the word photography can be translated as
"painting with light", and the short word can be "image". It is very hard to be determined only
one person as the original inventor of this word and the technique. But we can say that a big
portion of this evolution is due to Joseph-Nicephore Niepce, but his discovery was announced
in public by Jacques-Mande Daguerre, also known as Louis Daguerre, after the technique.

Before the word photography to become popular, the descriptive word used was "daguerreotype".

Photography was born in France in the year 1816, when Niepce created the first image on paper
with the help of a Camera Obscura device. In the year 1826, the same Niepce succeeds to obtain
his first heliography using bitumen. Later, in the year 1839 he arrives at the Art and Science Academy
in France, where presents his invention and describes it as a demonstration of reality. His invention
can be used in areas like science, medical, technical, astrology and many others.

The French paper Lumiere said: "Starting today we can travel without movement."

In the year 1826 Joseph Nicephore Niepce meet Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre. They start to work
together to improve the system Niepce has invented. Meantime, they discover "daguerreotype" which
was a precursor invention of modern photography. To obtain daguerreotype, they use iodine as a
sensitizer agent, along with a copper plate covered with some silver powder. Through the
developing in mercury steam, they succeed to create a negative relief image.

In the year 1839 Niepce died and his invention is taken by Louis Daguerre. Daguerre presents the
invention to the French Science Academy on 19 August 1839, where he received the invention patent.
Because of this, the official date of the invention of photography is 1839. The French state has
become the owner of the invention.
